Peacock bass have earned a reputation in the bass fishing world as ferocious, very powerful, and a bad-tempered sport fish. They behave like a largemouth bass on steroids, which makes them difficult for anglers to catch.

Once it decides to hit the lure, unsuspecting anglers are shocked because it strikes with such power. Dragging away the bait without even being caught by the hunters.

Twice as Strong as other Fish

Its strength is estimated to be twice that of other large fish. What seems to make peacock bass fish more powerful than other sports fish is their ability to double their strength once they surface and begin wrestling with the angler for the bait.

When peacock bass fishing many sport fishers think that after a minute or two of fighting with this large bass fish they will tire out easily. But that presumption is far from the truth.

Peacock bass usually have another shot of bursting power coming from the adrenaline that their body is producing. Thus it is not as easy as catching a regular black bass.

They Are Highly Evolved

Biological studies show that the peacock bass is very different from other fish. They are members of the Cichlid group of fish, which are reputed to be the most highly evolved group of fish.

Peacock bass are classified as a predatory freshwater fish, which feeds entirely on small fish. It is usually found in the rivers and basins of South America and the Amazon. Its speed, strength, size and ferocious nature make it well equipped to hunt for prey.

It is similar in appearance to a largemouth bass with a huge, bucket-like mouth. Peacock bass swallow up other fish of smaller sizes for their meals.

Three species of these sport fish are found in the Amazon. Brazilian natives such as the Cichla Temensis or the "tucunare azul or paca" are one species of the peacock bass.

Very Sensitive to Water Conditions

On the other hand, the Spanish-speaking communities consider them as "pavon azul or pinta lapa". This species is very sensitive to water conditions and tend to reside in tropical areas of the Amazon. Its weight is estimated at an average of 27 pounds.

The second species of peacock bass is the Cichla Ocellaris, known as the butterfly peacock. They are much smaller then the Cichla Temensis, weighing between 7 to 8 pounds. But they are also brutal fighters, ready to engage in a fight for the bait.

The third species is the Cichla Nigrolineatus, or royal peacock. Its habitat is in fast moving waters and weighs an average of 3 to 4 pounds. The seasonal cycle of the peacock bass is usually based on the equatorial weather conditions in the Amazon River.

The Best Times for Peacock Bass Fishing

Typical of the dry and wet seasons, the best time to go hunting for peacock bass is in the first six months of the year. This is when the water temperatures are not as extremely warm as at other times of the year.

For easier peacock bass fishing, anglers are advised to go about their bass fishing activities when the different rivers in the South American continent reach their lowest water levels.

Sports fishers can fish in the Amazon from December through March in the northern area. And from July through November in the southern area.

On the black waters of the northwestern Amazonian rivers, however, December through March is the best time for peacock bass fishing. This is because of the clear water conditions that are present during a typical dry season, making it easier for sport fishers to hunt the 27-pound peacock bass.

Strategies for Pursuing Peacock Bass

One of the best strategies for pursuing a peacock bass is to master the fishing technique best suited to the behaviour of the fish. It is advised that anglers do their research to improve their odds of catching this species of fish.

They must also take into consideration the biological history of the fish to come up with new techniques and become familiar with the South American continent's weather patterns. This knowledge will let you know where and when the peacock bass can be found and from this, determine the best season for hunting it.
